Assessing Democracy in the Western Balkans

Assessing Democracy in the Western Balkans is a current research project of the Group for Legal and Political Studies. This research project is primarily aimed at researching the democratization process in the Western Balkan countries. The assessment of democratization is in principle aimed at measuring the institutional but also behavioural aspects of the political systems of these given countries. As such, the focused interests of this research project will be (for the Western Balkans countries):

(1) The constitutional systems and legislation;
(2) The electoral systems and electoral behaviour;
(3) The political parties and their behaviour;
(4) The judiciaries and their functioning;
(5) The institutional political behaviour;
(6) Groups’ interests penetration into policy-making;
(7) The policy lines of the given polities and their consequences in the political system, consisting of:

  1. EU integration policies;
  2. Administrative reform policies;
  3. Market mechanism building policies;
  4. Competition policies;
  5. Investment policies, and
  6. The development policies, in general.

Assessing Democracy in the Western Balkans research project will produce regular working papers, with either an academic basis or a policy-based basis. In view of that, the Research Committee has set the basic standards for the external researchers’ engagement into this research, thus providing a safe-basis for the quality being demanded. This research project will be lasting for five years.
